Durango spinsters

True, cycling season never really ends in Durango. But as winter digs its clutches
into the local trails, it’s safe to say it’s winding down. To celebrate the season
that was – and wasn’t for a brief time – Mountain Bike Specialist is helping to host a Cycling Celebration this Thurs., Nov. 1, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Animas City Theatre.

Among the two-wheeled accomplishments that will be lauded are FLC Cycling’s recent back-to-back National MTB championship as well as last month’s Colorado High School League finals, which, of course, were hosted in Durango. Durango High won its division, followed by Animas High for a one-two Durango punch. In addition, several Durango cyclists competed in the International Cycling Union (UCI) World Cup this last summer in Switzerland.

“Durango is known throughout the world as a cycling mecca because of the synergy of our community,” organizer Patty Zink said.

The event will include several local cycling dignitaries, including road phenom Sepp Kuss, and Christopher Blevins and Howard Grotts, two local forces of natures in the MTB realm. Other guests of honor include FLC Cycling coach Dave Hagan, Iron Horse bicycle Classic Director Gaige Sippy, and Devo coach, Levi Kurlander.

In addition, a certificate of appreciation will be presented to the Katz Family, who hosted the state high school league on Durango Mesa.

Other sponsors include FLC Cycling, Trails 2000 and IHBC.

There’s about to be another reason to pull off 1-70 in Idaho Springs other than Beau Jo’s pizza. Work began last week on a $58 million gondola that will haul people 1,300 feet up the mountain from the historic Argo Mill in town.

The moose is loose, and don’t mess with her. This week, Colorado Parks and Wildlife issued a warning about potentially aggressive cow moose as they protect their young during calving season. The warning was issued in the wake of three recent attacks, which occurred in Park, Grand and Routt counties. Folks are advised to be extra vigilant near water with thick vegetation, where moose often hide their young, and be forewarned: nothing pisses them off more than furry four-legged hiking companions.

If you come upon a painted rock on your travels around Durango next week, don’t be so quick to dismiss it. It could be part of the City of Durango’s 3rd annual Scavenger Hunt. The hunt, which places five brightly painted rocks in various locations around the city, takes place Mon., May 26 - Fri., May 30.
