Purg reveals hottest new addition
Inferno Mountain Coaster construction under way
Purgatory unvieled the name for its newest year round diversion, the Inferno Mountain Coaster, which, when done, will look a lot like this.
Purgatory Resort announced this week it has begun work on its latest year-round attraction, the shiny new Inferno Mountain Coaster.
The 4,000-foot elevated steel track will zig and zag 300 vertical feet through nine switchbacks and one 360-degree turn. Part of $15 million in capital improvements at Purg and its sister ski areas, the coast will operate year round. It will be in addition to the existing Alpine Slide, which will still operate in the summer months.
The Inferno Coaster will be securely connected to the rails, and riders securely belted into the coaster offering a different experience form the slide. Riders will load into the cars (up to two per car) near the Eolus Condominiums, by Lift 4, and much like a roller coaster, ride the track to the top. However, unlike a roller coaster, riders can control how fast they go on the downhill, from Sunday driver to speed demon, with top speeds of 30 mph.
Crews are currently digging and pouring the coaster’s foundation, and the track will be laid next, weather permitting. There was no word on estimated completion date - stay tuned to Purg for more info.
*We originally erred in saying that Purg's beloved Alpine Slide was going the way of the dodo bird and rear-entry boots. But it turns out there's no such plan, and the slide is going to stick around for a good long while. And rear-entry is also reportedly making a big come back as well.
Plans show the location of the new mountain coaster. Riders will load near Eolus Condominiums and then will be transported up 300 vertical feet before zipping down the mountainside.
