Purg holds open house for Gelande realignment

Purg’s decommissioned Chair 8 could be rumbling back to life. The resort announced this week plans to resurrect the beloved but shall we say leisurely triple-chair in a new form: the new Gelande Lift.

Long in the works as part of the resort’s approved 2008 Master Plan, the Gelande Lift would start in the Gelande overflow lot and take skiers near the top of Styx – making it a boon for crack-o-nooners and those looking to avoid the skate over to the Columbine area.

Since the original Gelande Lift (aka the less sexy “Lift 17”) was approved in the Master Plan, closer and scrutinizing eyes have found an improved alignment for the lift, looker’s left to the current proposal.

According to resort officials, the new and improved Gelande Lift alignment would directly serve skiable terrain, Styx as well as a new trail to skier’s right of Styx, whereas the previous alignment was purely a people mover. It is believed the proposed realignment will help meet demand for more advanced terrain on the front-side while alleviating traffic on the oft-feared Demon. Purgatory is also proposing a new Gelande Day Lodge at the base of the lift, making it conceivable to completely avoid a trip to the Base Area.

At 4,200 feet, the proposed lift would be approximately 300 feet shorter than the previously approved lift and would incorporate parts from the old Lift 8. The realignment will require a 23-acre adjustment of the resort’s Special Use Permit boundary as well as an environmental assessment review from the Forest Service. The expansion area in question has been deemed “high-use, recreation emphasis” and “active management” in the resort’s previous Master Plan.

If approved, the Gelande Lift would be installed next summer.

Purgatory and Forest Service officials are hosting an open house next Tues., Oct. 17, to give folks a chance to view the realignment, give input and ask questions. The open house, which will also include updates on other resort upgrades, will be held at Purg’s new HQ, 2615 Main Ave.
