Fitting the definition of gangster

It occurred to me that many of the qualities that I perceived as being those of a gangster, were being highlighted in the news on a regular basis – all having to do with our esteemed president. So I checked on the definition of a gangster. The first part of the definition might be debatable, that of being part of a criminal organization. The rest not so much…. “a blend of manipulative charm, ruthlessness, strong emphasis on power, respect and loyalty.” Also “a core lack of empathy, linking to psychopathic traits like impulsivity, grandiosity and aggression, among others.” And “having characteristics of superficial charisma, emotional coldness, self-centerdness and a need to project dominance through intimidation and enforcement of strict loyalty and codes.”

Sound familiar?

Examples of Trumps “gangsterism” are seen in his almost-blatant disregard of the law and his quickness to use force out of proportion to need. One could argue that his easing of crypto currency regulations had benefited him financially, or using his properties for state functions in his first presidency benefited him. But a much more relevant example is his current cabinet composed of billionaires. Another example are his tax cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill, which will benefit the richest 10% of Americans by some $14,000 per year and will benefit the top 1% by saving them $50,000 per year (estimates by the CBO).

And if a member of his “gang” falls prey to the long arm of the law (the Supreme Court has all but indemnified Trump for illegal acts), the power of the pardon (think George Santos, Rudi Giuliani or the Jan. 6 rioters) is one of his favorite tools. It’s like busting a fellow criminal out of the pen, but he only has to use a pen to do this.

If you look at those president pardons and the people they’re associated with then contrast them with people he vilifies (James Comey, Leticia James, Joe Biden), it makes sense that we indeed have elected a gangster to the highest office in the land. But even though gangsters can often be celebrated (think Bonnie and Clyde), the hope for this holiday season is that eventually, people will see past the veneer and lies and see Trump for what he is: a gangster in presidential clothing.
