Running the meat: All the wet and wild action of the Animas River Days Parade

Durango's beloved Animas River is currently pulsing at over 4,000 cfs from winter's bounty, and locals are rejoicing. Last weekend, for the 32nd annual Animas River Days, costumes came out of closets and river lovers grabbed anything that floats in order to get down the 5-mile town run for the annual spectacle that is the Animas River Days parade. This year though, boaters were grabbing onto the chicken line a little tighter, running to the high side a little faster, and pulling their skirts on a little harder as the Whitewater Park at Smelter served up a few new tricky maneuvers. Fortunately, the river gods were kind as many rose to the challenge – and a few accepted their fate – much to the delight of the cheering, jeering crowd.
