Up in the air: Vying for the golden ticket at Big Brothers Big Sisters' Suitcase Party

Even though we live in one of the most beautiful towns, there is almost always a day when we think, “Wouldn't it be nice to just get away from it all? Even just for a weekend?” Nonprofit child mentoring group, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of La Plata County, has heard those wishes, and for three years running, has made it a dream come true. Each year at the their annual Suitcase Party, held Fri., Oct. 6, at the La Plata County Regional airport, one lucky person (and a plus one) has his or her name drawn to be whisked away on an unknown, all inclusive, weekend resort getaway. This year’s raffle winner, Dixie Melton, and her guest, Kim Pappas, found themselves the winners of the golden ticket: a weekend getaway to Palm Springs on a private chartered jet. But even if you didn’t win, the night wasn’t a total loss with plenty of music, cocktails, good company and food – all for a good cause. And there’s always next year, so pack your nice underwear, because you never know where you'll end up.
