Durango Police seek information on hate crime
A swastika drawn on a residence in Three Springs is being investigated by the Durango Police Department as a hate crime.
According to a press release from police, a large swastika was drawn on the garage door at a house in the 400 block of Clear Spring Drive, in Three Springs, on Sept. 21. Further investigation by police revealed that two other incidents similar in nature had occurred earlier at the same residence but went unreported.
Police also recently learned of an additional incident last week involving a swastika that was scratched into the side of a vehicle parked at Animas Surgical Hospital, at Rivergate.
It is believed all incidents are related. They are being classified as hate crimes due to the fact that they target and attempt to intimidate citizens based on race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
“The Durango Police Department takes these types of crimes very seriously,” stated the press release. “We encourage anyone with information to please report these crimes when they occur so they can be investigated right away.”
Police are asking anyone with information on these crimes to please contact either of the investigators working on the case, Officer Harper or Officer Doocy, via dispatch at 970-385-2900.
