A place to call home
Creating housing for the homeless will be the topic of a daylong forum this Sat., Feb. 17, at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Sponsored by Durango Christian Church, the event will feature Donald Burnes, author and founder of the University of Denver’s Center on Poverty and Homelessness, as well as architect Stuart Ohlson, founder of Humanitarian House International.
A respected architect whose Denver-based firm Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative has offices in, Toyko, Orlando and Cairo, Ohlson founded HHI upon retirement. The Colorado-based nonprofit develops and deploys lightweight, portable housing for people recovering from natural disasters, war and other life-changing events. The organization also supplies add-ons to transform emergency housing into unique, low-cost permanent shelters.
In addition to presentations from both Burnes and Ohlson, there will be one-on-ones with members of the local homeless community; a documentary on Hawaii’s homeless situation; a talk by FLC engineering Professor Don May; a panel discussion on the pros and cons of tent cities and tiny home villages; as well as perspectives from La Plata County Commissioner Julie Westendorff and Durango Mayor Dick White.
The event is free and open to the public. For more info., email donnamaebaukat@gmail.com.

It’s a mash-up made in Westernwear heaven. Sort of. Seems Chaco, the purveyor of the iconic strappy dirtbag river rat footwear, has joined forces with Wrangler, as in tight jeans, big belt buckles, bull riding and snap shirt fame.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
