Computers for kids

Before you haul off those old computers, why not put them to good use? A unique new local venture is giving new life to discarded computers in an effort to help less fortunate kids.

This week, Dave Sessions, owner of the Mac Ranch and Animas Underground Electronics, San Juan BOCES and local nonprofit Rafting4Recovery announced a technology drive to refurbish out-dated PC's, laptops, desktops, iPads and redistribute them to local students in need of such devices.

Under the program, people can bring their old computers and devices into one of Session’s locations (1480 E. Second Ave. or 501 Main Ave.) where they will be refurbished. They will then be passed on to BOCES, which will identify and distribute them directly to students in need.

“In the modern age, students unequipped and unfamiliar with technology are unable to meet the expectations and demands of the current academic culture,” Shane Nelson, director of Rafting4Recovery, said. “Studies have shown that a lack of exposure to technology severely inhibits students’ ability to perform at the next levels of their educational paths. What we are doing is giving them access to the tools to succeed.”

In addition to helping the community, the drive is also helping the environment. “By donating a device, we are empowering those who need it most and eliminating more, nonbiodegradable waste in our landfills,” said Nelson.

The program is looking for PC's, laptops, desktops, tablets and iPads manufactured in 2005 or later and that are compatible with the refurbishing software being used.
