DDs: still cheaper than DUIs
Thinking about getting a little extra toasty this holiday season? That’s fine – just don’t get in your car and try to drive. And while that may be a no-brainer, perhaps this will make it an even easier decision: the average cost of a DUI in Colorado is now $13,530. That’s more than the cost of most cars in which DUIs occur, and up more than a third from the last time costs were tabulated, in 2008.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, State Patrol and NoDUIColorado.org, a major factor in the increased cost is that the average busted driver is more than twice over the legal limit. That bumps them into the “Persistent Drunk Driver” (aka PDD) category (.15 or higher), which carries with it higher penalties and fines. Drivers over that limit will be tagged PDD even if it’s their first offense.
This year, the statewide average BAC in DUI cases was .164 – more than twice the legal limit of .08. Locally, the average BAC in Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan counties was .160.
In addition to carrying a heavy cost, PDD designation also increases consequences. Drivers must have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicles for 2 years and complete weekly alcohol and drug education and treatment classes over nine months.
These, as well as 22 different fees and expenses – from detox, jail and court costs to lawyer fees and increased insurance rates – all contribute to the high DUI price tag.
Remember: only you can prevent your next DUI.

It’s a mash-up made in Westernwear heaven. Sort of. Seems Chaco, the purveyor of the iconic strappy dirtbag river rat footwear, has joined forces with Wrangler, as in tight jeans, big belt buckles, bull riding and snap shirt fame.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
