Getting roped in
The bad news: it’s not snowing. The good news: it’s great biking weather. So why not take advantage of the optimal off-season conditions and hit the road? To give you even more incentive to get off the couch, registration for the 47th annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic open with a “locals-only” party this Fri., Dec. 1, from 12 noon – 8 p.m. at Mountain Bike Specialists, 949 Main Ave. If you can’t make the party, online registration opens to the masses at 8 a.m. Sat., Dec. 2.
The Iron Horse takes place the weekend of May 25-27, 2018. This (ok technically “next”) year’s event will feature the flagship race and citizens ride to Silverton as well as a mountain bike race, kids races, the Quarterhorse and a gravel grinder. There will also be a kids push-bike park/activity center as well as a BMX demo.
Last year, some 3,800 riders from 44 countries participated in various Iron Horse events.
For more info or to lock yourself into six months of training, set your alarm for 7:59 a.m. Saturday and go to ironhorsebicycleclassic.com.

It’s a mash-up made in Westernwear heaven. Sort of. Seems Chaco, the purveyor of the iconic strappy dirtbag river rat footwear, has joined forces with Wrangler, as in tight jeans, big belt buckles, bull riding and snap shirt fame.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
