Going to the hogs
Wait! Don’t smash that pumpkin. The City of Durango, in conjunction with Bear Smart Durango and the CSU Extension Office, will be collecting jack-o-lanterns and other “festive squash” to be distributed to local farms and ranches as livestock feed. Residents can drop off their spent gourds between 12 noon – 6 p.m. Friday or 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds or the Three Springs Police Substation, 545 Wilson Gulch Drive.
The purpose of the pumpkin pig-out is to keep pumpkins out of the mouths of hungry bears or the landfill while helping to plump up your next round of bacon. Win-win.
Folks are asked to please remove any candles, wax, paint or other inedible pumpkin bling prior to drop-off out of courtesy to the swine. For more information, visit durangogov.org/sustainability.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
