The NHL has the Stanley Cup, and in these parts, local beer league hockey players lust after a different holy grail: the Southwest Cup.
And last Sunday, the Cup came home to Durango after an extended stay in the Gunnison Valley. A short-benched Durango Betties won the Cup over cross-mountain rivals, Gunnison’s DaBeers, in a fierce OT win with 19 seconds left on the clock in championship play. The winning goal was scored on a breakaway by Devon Schmidt, a typically mild-mannered La Plata County employee, to bring the final score to 4-3 Betties.
The Betties last brought the Cup home to Durango in 2009 or ’10 – nobody really remembers.
The ladies partially credit the victory to a mysterious and rather large pair of gray granny panties that appeared in their locker room courtesy Crested Butte’s Cougars & Kitties. In a show of classic beer league one-up-womanship, the copious undergarment was worn during the championship round by a Betties power defender, who shall remain nameless due to her respectable day job at a local accounting firm. And yes, she did score in them.
The Southwest Cup will enjoy the next year in Durango, where it will likely make the rounds to several barbecues, The Ranch and perhaps a hot tub or two. And when not being used for beer bongs, it can be viewed at the Betties home ice, Chapman Hill Ice Arena. The undies, unfortunately, will not be on display.

On most days, Tracy Harwood spends her time as a court clerk for the City of Durango. But next Thurs., June 4 – International Corgi Day – she hopes to bring something entirely different to town: short legs, wiggly butts and oversized personalities.

It’s a mash-up made in Westernwear heaven. Sort of. Seems Chaco, the purveyor of the iconic strappy dirtbag river rat footwear, has joined forces with Wrangler, as in tight jeans, big belt buckles, bull riding and snap shirt fame.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
