To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Ross’ feat, the City of Durango is declaring this Sun., April 19, “Ross Anderson Day” with a celebration starting at 10 a.m. at Rotary Park. Anderson grew up in Durango and honed his need for speed in the surrounding San Juan Mountains, where he was known to train in Velocity Basin.

The celebration also carries cultural significance. In addition to being the U.S. record holder, Ross – a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes and of Mescalero Apache and Choctaw descent – is also the first Native American to be inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. He also has dedicated his time working to introduce Native youth to skiing.

In addition to an appearance by Ross, the event will feature a traditional acknowledgment, cultural performances and a proclamation from Durango Mayor Gilda Yazzie.

Anderson was born May 8, 1971, at Holloman Air Force Base in N.M. but grew up in Durango. He now lives in Albuquerque.

He broke the former All-American record in 2006 with a speed of 154.06 mph flying past former record holder, John Hembel, of Aspen. Ross is currently ranked 17th in the world, with Simon Billy, of France, currently holding the world record, set in 2023.

Gas prices are once again giving America something to complain about. And while the local beer meisters at Ska Brewing can’t fix the price at the pump, the brewery is offering one small bit of relief: a new light beer that costs one cent less than the price of a gallon of unleaded gas.

Introducing Ska’s newest brew: West’s Easy Light Lager, because “everything else is so hard.”
