Rapid commute

It’s time to trade in the business suit for the swimsuit as the City of Durango hosts what is sure to be a brisk and refreshing first-ever Float to Work Day this Fri., Aug. 25.

Modeled after Boulder’s infamous “Tube to Work Day,” in which hundreds of “commuters” don suits, ties and the occasional super hero costume and converge on Boulder Creek, the Durango version is meant to encourage alternative transportation. (OK, so once you get to work you still need to figure out the shuttle; but just go with it.)

Durango’s Float to Work Day takes place from 7 – 9 a.m., and participants are advised to put in at 29th Street and take out at 9th Street to avoid any pre-work mishaps through the Whitewater Park. It should go without saying that PFDs and helmets are strongly encouraged. And no, playing the “I forgot mine” card won’t work – 4 Corners River Sports will be offering free loaner PFDs and helmets, as well as half off SUP and ducky rentals. Tubes will also be for sale for 30 percent off.

Better yet, if you’re among the lucky first eight to show up Friday morning, you can hop on a guided raft for free provided by Mild to Wild. Additional spots will be available at 7:30, 8, 8:30 or 9 a.m. trips for $8/person for those who pre-register online at getarounddurango.com.

To warm up those chilly digits and appendages, there will be free goodies, coffee and tea set up at Schneider Park, courtesy 4 Corners and Durango Coffee Co. (please BYOMug.)

As of Wednesday, the Animas was flowing at a tube-friendly 350 cfs, with the water temp hovering around a balmy 60 degrees (practically bath water for the Animas.)

For tips on ensuring you make it to work in one piece, the City would like to point you to its Animas River Floating Information Brochure at: durangogov.org/DocumentCenter/View/6941.

And if you’re late to work? Just explain to the boss you couldn’t find a spot to park your tube.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
