Shake, shake, shake

Shake, shake, shake

Durangoans are being asked to get their groove on for a cause with the first-ever Durango shimmy mob, set for May 13.

Unlike your typical flash mob, a shimmy mob incorporates belly dancing – and not so incidentally, May 13 also happens to be World Belly Dance Day (yes, apparently there is such a thing.) But more importantly, the shimmy mob, which coincides with events being held around the world, will help raise funds and awareness for womens and childrens domestic violence programs. In Durango, funds raised will go to Alternative Horizons.

No experience is necessary for the shimmy fest, and the whole family is invited. However, shimmiers must register by March 31 at www.shimmymob.com. (Cost is $35 and includes a T-shirt and warm fuzzies from helping out your community.)

New to this shimmy business? Local belly dancer Shelley Millsap will be holding free practices from 2 - 4 p.m. Saturdays leading up to the event at Durango Martial Arts Academy (located behind Natural Grocers and Backcountry Experience next to the River Trail). DMAA is donating the space to help support the event and cause.

For more information, check out Durango Shimmy Mob on Facebook, call (970) 589-9882 or e-mail shelley.millsap@gmail.com.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup.
