Taking the BAC roads
Speaking of alternative transportation, you might want to consider it this weekend and next. The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office has announced it will be conducting sobriety checkpoints between 5 p.m. – 12 midnight on Aug. 25, and Sept. 1. (We’re thinking these won’t include coffee and pastries like the Float to Work station.)
Exact location of the check-points were not divulged except to say they will be somewhere “on the eastern side of La Plata County.” The Sheriff’s Office is coordinating the checkpoints with Colorado State Patrol and the Bayfield Marshal. To help in your weekend decision-making, the Colorado Department of Transportation is working with BACtrack (get it? “BAC?”) is offering 20 percent off and free shipping on its handheld personal breathalyzers. The breathalyzers come in either handheld or smartphone compatible models and range in price from $49.99 to $129.99 (for the heavy breathers, we suppose.) To check them out, go to www.BACtrack.com and use the code “CDOT” at checkout for the discount.

It’s a mash-up made in Westernwear heaven. Sort of. Seems Chaco, the purveyor of the iconic strappy dirtbag river rat footwear, has joined forces with Wrangler, as in tight jeans, big belt buckles, bull riding and snap shirt fame.

Turns out, blondes do have more fun, or at least they get more awards. Last week, Ska Brewing won the gold medal for its True Blonde Ale in the English-Style Pale Ale category at the 2026 World Beer Cup. This is the third win for the Blonde at the World Beer Cup, held in Philadelphia on April 22 and pegged as one of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions.
