The right way

It’s a debate for the ages. Not since college classroom discussions over the proper name for a resident of this state – Coloradoan or Coloradan – has the Centennial State been so divided.

Of course, we’re talking about the proper way to pronounce the name of our fair state without looking like, well, a transplant or worse, a tourist. So what is it: Colo-ROD-o or Colo-RAD-o?

The good folks at Colorado Public Radio recently posed this question in an impromptu newsroom poll. The question was spurred by a tweet from New York Times Rocky Mountain correspondent Jack Healy, who asked for a decisive answer to this most burning of questions once and for all.

Unfortunately, the poll leaves the debate still smoldering. According to CPR’s Daniel Schneider (a 33-year resident who prefers the “ROD” pronunciation) the survey found that while several natives say "Colo-RAD-o," a couple also say "ColoROD-o." And the transplants in the room overwhelmingly use the latter pronunciation.
