Guardians of the Fallacy 

Researchers from Macquarie University in Australia spread rumors online about a fake militia of armed racoons to test the difference between “survey trolls” and people dumb enough to believe conspiracy theories. The false claim was that the Canadian Armed Forces has been training genetically engineered giant racoons (like Rocket from that one movie) to invade neighboring countries. Thirteen percent of the people who supported the theory turned out to be trolls, but an alarming 10% truly believed that the story was “probably or definitely true.” Of course, everyone else in the study started roasting the people who fell for it when the results were published in May, but I’ve seen memes of racoons holding knives, and Canada is our neighbor, so…
